Caroline was a gentle and kind friend whose generosity knew no bounds. She was an intellectually rigorous colleague whose contributions were always valuable. She once told me that she would stop reading any novel that didn't seem worthwhile pretty quickly. Why? Because she had worked out how many novels she could read in her life and didn't want to waste time on anything that didn't inspire or move her. I hope every novel she read gave her great pleasure. And I will remember her as a true friend to me and to so many others.
