We have just returned from a trip to Ecuador where we thought of Caroline often, as the history of that country permeated the actions people take in the face of natural hazards today. We (Teresa Armijos and Jenni Barclay) were part of the Network on Disasters that Caroline instigated. We attended meetings and ran one here, and Caroline's calm and welcoming manner were a central force in all of them. We were looking forward to working with her more and benefiting from her wisdom. She was one of the genuinely 'wise women' we have met in our time in academia and although we will miss her, we will try to learn from that and follow her lead in how we collaborate, share and think. Thank you Caroline.
