For me, having just arrived in the School in the year when she was on research leave, Caroline was one of the persons I was looking forward to working with in the coming year. I remember vividly the questions she posed during my job interview -- probing and with seriousness of purpose, but also with a sparkle in her eyes that put one at ease. I knew she was a key member of the school, with considerable experience at all levels and bags of wisdom. She also did fantastic research on topics that intersected with my work. I was anticipating a discussion about disaster theory, perhaps some fruitful exchanges based on our respective experiences from different regions of the world. She left us much too soon -- there was so much to talk about – and her absence leaves a huge gap, but she will also remain in our conversations, memories, and values, so she will continue to inspire what we do. -- Andreas
